If you have the time and energy, pay €1 to climb the church tower for the view.

Perast’s only other “sight” is its Town Museum, which fills a grand old hall with paintings, furniture, navy uniforms, model ships, pistols, portraits of VIPs (very important Perastians), medals, traditional musical instruments, and other historic bric-a-brac. It’s pretty dull but has nice sea views (€2.50, July-Aug Mon-Sat 9:00-21:00, Sun 9:00-14:00, progressively shorter hours off-season, closed Sun Nov-April; along the water near the start of town, in the ornate building with the arcade and balcony; tel. 032/373-519).

Eating in Perast: For an enjoyable drink or meal, consider the upscale Conte restaurant, filling a pier on the bay in the middle of town (€8-13 pastas, €12-20 main dishes). On the far side of the square is another, well-shaded pier restaurant, Admiral (€9-13 pastas, €9-20 main dishes). Both are open daily and attached to recommended hotels.

• Before leaving Perast, take a close look at the two islands just offshore (and consider paying a visit).
